In Jinju, the proud city of a thousand year history, Jinju Namgang Yudeung festival was originally from the traditional events about lanterns. After that it has been developed as a widespread festival from 2002.

At Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival, the representative festival of South Korea in October, we can see folk dolls and fairy tale characters that display Korean traditional culture, mixed with Jinju’s natural beautiful sights that makes the festival more fancy and splendid. Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival was appointed as the target festival by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2004. Afterwards, appointed as the great festival in 2005, and the greatest festival for 5 years, from 2006 to 2010.
In 2011 Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival has become the representative festival in South Korea.

It was appointed as ‘the most like-to-visit festival in October’ by Japanese BBB magazine and has been awarded 3 gold prizes and 1 bronze prize by World Festival Association.

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival, with the slogan ‘Water, Fire, Light and our Wishes’ together with a Korean custom theme, has become the festival that people can come and see, feel and share together.

Held from the 1st to the 14th October 2012, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival’s duration is longer with various activities. At that time, the whole town will become festive, active and marvellously decorated with colorful lights and lamps along every lane.

At the classic event of 2012, visitors can join 20,000 floating lanterns, 27,000 hanging wishing lanterns along 800 meters of Namgang riverside.

Besides, there are also exhibitions about Korean customs, history and folk dances that display Jinju's image of 400 years ago. Exhibitions of world traditional lanterns and Korean lanterns, cartoon character lanterns are also held at that time.
