(Seoul=NSP News Agency) soon ki Lee Journalist = Hyundai Steel announced that it would build its own electric furnace-based carbon-neutral steel production system, Hy-Cube, and produce low-carbon, high-grade steel plates by converting it to a hydrogen-based steel production system by 2030.
The goal is to lead carbon neutrality in the electric furnace field through a new concept of electric furnace production technology.
Hy-Cube(Hy3; Hy-Cube, Hyundai Hydrogen Hybrid) refers to Hyundai Steel’s unique hydrogen-based process fusion steel production system.
The core of Hy-Cube technology is the Hy-Arc, which is a new-concept electric furnace that can be developed from the existing electric furnace to melt scrap(scrap iron) to remove impurities and add ingredients.
Hyundai Steel will use scrap(scrap iron), molten iron(molten iron produced in a blast furnace), and DRI(direct reduced iron) in a new concept of electric furnace to minimize carbon generation and produce high-quality sheet materials such as automotive steel sheets.
A Hyundai Steel official said, “The goal is not to simply reduce the carbon generated during the production process, but ultimately to produce high-performance products that could not be produced in existing electric furnaces and supply them to the carbon-neutral product market.” and “We will make efforts through solidarity and cooperation with domestic steelmakers,”
