(Seoul=NSP NEWS AGENCY) = HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) plans to expand K-ship exports with the Philippines as its key base

On the 18th, Hyundai Heavy Industries held a launching ceremony for the 3,200-ton Philippine corvette Miguel Malvar, the lead ship, at its Ulsan headquarters, with high-ranking military officials from the Philippines and South Korea in attendance.

The ship was named the Miguel Malvar in honor of the Filipino independence fighter. Secretary Teodoro’s wife, Mrs. Monica Prieto Teodoro, served as godmother to bring the ship to life.

“We have successfully delivered a Philippine corvette, which is a symbol of the friendly relations between Korea and the Philippines,” said an official from HD HHI. “The Miguel Malvar is a state-of-the-art ship with a length of 118.4 meters, a width of 14.9 meters, a cruising speed of 15 knots(about 28 km/h) and a range of 4,500 nautical miles(8330 km), and is equipped with advanced weapon systems such as anti-ship missiles, vertical launchers, and AESA radars.”

The Miguel Malvar is scheduled to be delivered to the Philippine Navy next year after undergoing sea trials and final assembly. The second Philippine corvette, which had its groundbreaking ceremony on the 14th, will be launched in December of this year and delivered sometime next year.
